The New iPhone 4G Spotted in San Francisco !
The developer of iBart (a transit application for San Francisco) had apparently a very nice surprise today. While consulting his Pinchmedia report he discovered that his app has been installed and used on an device that identifies itself as “iPhone 3.1″ : PinchMedia who provides the analytics for the application breaks down customer usage including what specific devices are being used. This list of devices is reported to developers using internal device identification numbers assigned by Apple. In this case, “iPhone3,1″ was first spotted in Pandav’s usage logs in November. The latest iPhone, the 3GS identifies itself as “iPhone 2.1″ so apparently the new iPhone model would be undergoing real life tests in the San Francisco area. All of this is not really surprising actually, the 3GS model was also first spotted online around november 2008 and we already saw references to the new model in Apple’s iPhone firmware. I’m personally hoping that it will feature a shaver and the latest ARM dual-core processors… you? [Update] One of our commenters (Who would apparently be Saurik, Cydia’s creator) is pointing out an interesting fact : It is actually possible to “fake” your device identifier by jailbreaking your iPhone and changing the system files. Also, don’t get excited about the picture, it’s a fake of course. Would this just be a hoax?
Fring is a VoIP and chat client for your mobile phone. The service works with a handful of various networks, including Skype, AIM, MSN Messenger and Twitter. You can even make calls to landlines from your SkypeOut and SkypeIn account and place voice calls to your Skype and Fring address book. Today, Fring is taking its iPhone app to the next level by bringing support for video chat. Nokia added this feature to some of its devices last week, and the new version of Fring is now in the app store. Fring is free and you can grab it here (iTunes link). That means the iPhone/iPod Touch can now accept incoming Skype Video Calls! This can lead to a bunch of ways to monitor something as well. I wont lie, I've never really used Fring. I've fired it up once or twice before, but with this update I am very tempted to try it out again. The only problem with this is the iPhone doesn’t have a camera on the front, making for awkward video conversations, but we can only hope for one when the next iPhone is released in 2010. Below is a video by Fring demonstrating the service. Although, all I see is a bunch of greenscreen work and simple screen tracking, but I would imagine it's pretty close to the real deal.
I just noticed an update to the RockApp and after installing, and rebooting, I was prompted by RockApp with a note that told me my SSH Password was still at the default of 'alpine' and that I should change my password immediately. (I just restored recently and had not done this yet)
After accepting the pop-up, I was able to enter in a new password. I was then informed that the password had been successfully changed.
Most of you have probably already changed your passwords by now, but if you haven't, this is possibly the easiest way to do so without entering the terminal.
Not only does this update bring an easy way to change your SSH Password, I believe this is another huge step forward for RockApp and another reason you should use both Cydia AND RockApp. I am starting to use RockApp more and more, and the stability just keeps getting better and better.
DigiTimes, the Taiwan-based site that reports on the East Asia mobile phone industry, has another report out today regarding Qualcomm chips in Apple phones. According to their sources, Qualcomm is talking to Apple about its new hybrid mobile chips. However, previous rumors that the phones would be released by summer of next year may not pan out, according to this report. Qualcomm's new hybrid chip allows phones to use the networks of CDMA/EVDO carriers - such as Verizon and Sprint in the United States - and UMTS/HSPA+ carriers including AT&T and T-Mobile. In addition, the same chip supports LTE, which is a network technology that major carriers have announced plans to implement starting next year. The chips are not expected to make it into the summer 2010 iPhone release, as the field test process will have to continue at least that long if the chips are only entering production now. The DigiTimes report indicates that Qualcomm is, rather, looking for a deal with Apple for "future cooperation". Qualcomm - though the largest fabless chip manufacturer in the world - is looking to regain market share since many popular smartphones use its competitors' technology: the iPhone uses Infineon chipsets, the BlackBerry uses Freescale and the Palm Pre is based on Marvell chips. Qualcomm supplies 3G chips to LG, Samsung and HTC. The first phones using Qualcomm's hybrid chip are anticipated to go on sale in late 2010.
The British Broadcasting Corporation, more commonly known as "BBC", is the longest and largest running broadcaster in the world. The BBC is paid for by an annual television licence fee, which is charged to all UK households that use equipment capable of recording and/or receiving live television broadcasts. Of course this fee is decided by the Government, leading to god knows what for prices. But for all of you BBC watchers, here is some good news. The BBC iPlayer will be bringing downloads and live streaming to your iPhone, even including interactive options and built-in streaming radio. This has all been confirmed by a leaked screenshot of the new player in action. The image shows a brand new BBC iPlayer iPhone app, complete with search, live streaming and the option to download TV shows. Yes, we said DOWNLOAD. Even more interesting, the live shows have the option to “send a message” to the program directly from the iPhone app. None of the new features are currently available with the iPlayer. So this is big news for BBC Watchers. Of course I have no release date for you, but from what we've seen it looks pretty much wrapped up. From the images we can also see that is on Wi-Fi so we can assume that 3G is probably disabled. However, if BBC really does allow TV downloads onto the iPhone, that might not matter at all. I should also mention, before you get your hopes up, this BBC iPlayer app is only available to UK residents. Digital Rights issues prevent BBC iPlayer working outside the UK. Of course, I'm sure we all know, there are always workarounds, but I'll leave that up to you to figure out. If you are in the UK and interested in using iPlayer through Media Center or your Xbox 360, Neowin posted a guide earlier this week on how to enable this - unofficially.

Call of Duty for iPhone | iPod Touch!
Treyarch brings the classic Call of Duty: World at War zombie-slaying game mode to the iPhone and iPod Touch. It features the original map “Nacht der Untoten” (Night of the Undead) from the Xbox/PS3/PC version with apparently more to come. You must fight to survive in the barricaded bunker and you can bring along up to 3 of your friends (via WiFi and Bluetooth) to help slaughter the endless waves of attacking zombies! Enjoy!
iClassic is a media player for your library, that mimics the interface of the famous iPod Classic. It will fully emulate the iPod Classic's functionality, including using the old-school Click Wheel. Unfortunately, the app will not support games in this release but it is being worked on for future updates. The app is expected to cost $2.00 from the Cydia Store. I spoke with Emilio Peláez earlier today and he has informed me that this application is indeed complete and he is simply waiting on confirmation from @saurik for it to be added to the Store. So we can expect this any moment. At this point I don't have confirmation if it will be in the ModMyI repo or not but keep your eyes peeled! Now, I'm not entirely sure why you would want to go backwards with technological designs, but I guess for the simple fact that you can do it, makes it kinda cool. This app would be more for the fanatics who had iPods since day one or prefer the simpler navigation style. I however jumped the bandwagon much later on, but I just might have to play with this app for kicks and giggles.
A new application approved for the App Store brings widgets to the iPhone, circumventing the need to first jailbreak it. Yes, indeed, iGizmoz has earned Apple's stamp of approval. Why? For obvious reasons. While there are already a few high-profile apps like Cydget and SmartScreen that enable one to set up widgets on the iPhone, that process is only made possible by jailbreaking the device. You can understand why Apple is seemingly gung-ho about iGizmoz, although its unlikely anyone is going to regret having jailbroken their iPhones because of this $0.99 application's arrival.
